How to Make a Saint Valentine Portrait for Kids

Primary Blog/How to Make a Saint Valentine Portrait for Kids

This St. Valentine Mixed Media Portrait project invites children to celebrate the feast of Saint Valentine by creating a vibrant and meaningful artwork. Using a mix of materials like sulphite paper, oil pastels, paint sticks and glitter paint, kids will craft a portrait of Saint Valentine surrounded by hearts and symbols of love and faith. The central focus is a heart-shaped motif that reflects God’s love, with bright, joyful colors radiating outward to symbolize the saint’s selfless devotion to others. This project not only encourages creativity but also fosters a deeper understanding of Saint Valentine’s role as a patron of love and his commitment to Christ.

Here are some wonderful books to tie in with this art lesson:

Here is what you need to make this art project:

  • 12" x 18" white sulphite paper
  • Face & heart templates (included)
  • Black crayon

  • Kwik Stix
  • Black & white oil pastels
  • Gold glitter or metallic paint *optional
  • Heart stickers, dot markers for decorating the background *optional

CREATE:

Here is how it all came together:

Using a black crayon, draw/trace a large oval shape near the top center of your paper to outline Saint Valentine’s face. Draw/trace a large heart shape below the neck, positioned in the center of the paper.

Add two slightly curved vertical lines on the bottom of the face for the neck. Then, sketch two curved lines extending outward and downward from the sides of the neck to outline the shoulders and garment.

Use your black crayon to draw a circular halo around the face. Fill in the oval (face) and neck with a peach or light orange paint stick, creating a smooth and even tone. Avoid coloring the halo or other areas for now, focusing on Saint Valentine’s face.

Use a red and gold or yellow paint stick to fill in the garment below the neck and shoulders. Draw a smaller heart inside of the larger heart shape with black crayon.

For the heart, use a pink paint stick to color the outer section of the heart. Leave the inner heart blank for now. Use a brown paint stick to color Saint Valentine’s hair and beard.

Using a black oil pastel, add facial features. Use a red or pink oil pastel for his cheeks.

Use gold glitter paint OR a yellow or gold paint stick to color the halo surrounding Saint Valentine’s face, giving it a bright and glowing appearance. Do the same for the inner section of the heart.

For the garment, draw radiant white lines extending outward from the heart to symbolize love and devotion.

Use a black OIL PASTEL to add texture lines to the hair and beard. When the gold paint has dried, outline the crayon lines with black oil pastel to really make St. Valentine pop!

Add swirls, rays, or patterns to the background and garment using your paint sticks, stickers or other materials.
