How to Make St. Michael Art with Kids

Catholic Art Lessons for Kids/How to Make St. Michael Art with Kids

In this bold and dynamic project, children will create a powerful image of St. Michael the Archangel, defender of heaven. Using a fun and kid-friendly printmaking technique, students draw and color with washable markers on aluminum foil, then transfer the designs with water to create vibrant textures. These prints become the fiery wings, shining shield, and strong sword of St. Michael, symbolizing his role as protector. Students then draw and color the saint’s figure, arranging all the elements into a striking composition on black paper that makes the colors glow.

This lesson combines printmaking, drawing, collage, and symbolism, helping children engage both creatively and spiritually as they honor St. Michael’s courage and strength. It also includes a printable coloring page of St. Michael for younger ages! Just print onto card stock and children can still participate with the printmaking right onto the printed sheet.

This project takes about two 30 minute sessions to complete. (One for the wings & shield and one for making Saint Michael)

Faith Connection: Just as St. Michael defends the Church, children can call on him in prayer whenever they feel afraid or need courage. This project encourages kids to remember that, with God’s strength and the help of His angels, they too can be brave and stand strong in their faith.

CREATE:

Here is how it all came together:

Fold the white paper in half vertically. Starting toward the top of the fold, use a black crayon to draw half of the wings. Cut it out while folded and open to reveal a symmetrical shape for the wings.

Use a black permanent marker to draw feathers for the angel wings. You can add a simple wave pattern like above or add detailed feathers. Have fun!

Using warm colored WASHABLE markers (red, orange, yellow, pink), color in sections of the aluminum foil making sure it’s big enough to cover the wings.

With a spray bottle of water, spray the foil. Add enough water so you see the markers start to bleed into one another.

Place the wings black marker side down onto the wet aluminum foil. Press down to make sure the colors transfer onto the paper. Gently peel off the wings to reveal your printed design! Repeat the process for the shield and sword. If you need to add more marker and water, you can color in the areas that are blank on the foil. Set aside to dry.

On the other white paper, use a black crayon to trace the face template, leaving enough room at the top for a halo. Add two curved lines for the neck. Extend the neck lines out for shoulders and curve the lines all the way down to the bottom of the paper. Add a halo & ears.

Color the skin with a marker or crayon. Use a paint stick or oil pastel for the hair and shirt. Add facial features with oil pastel and color in the halo with gold or yellow paint stick or oil pastel.

Cut out St. Michael, the sword and shield. Glue the wings to the black background paper. Then glue down St. Michael followed by the shield and sword.
