How to Make St. Joseph Art for Kids

Primary Blog/How to Make St. Joseph Art for Kids

In this hands-on Catholic art lesson, children will create a beautiful Chaste Heart of St. Joseph using watercolor and an oil pastel resist technique. They will begin by sketching the heart and lily—symbols of St. Joseph’s purity and devotion—using a white oil pastel. As they paint over the design with vibrant watercolor washes, the pastel resists the paint, revealing the glowing white lily at the heart’s center. Finally, they will add bold black crayon outlines and fiery details to complete this striking sacred heart artwork.

This creative experience for kids is a wonderful way to honor St. Joseph during March (or any time of the year!), teaching kids about his virtues while exploring color, contrast, and texture in a fun and meaningful way!

This project takes about one 30 minute session to complete (plus another 10 minute session to allow for drying time if you wish to add the optional details).

Great for ages 5+

PREP

Here is what you need to make this art project:

  • 9" x 12" watercolor paper
  • Heart template (included)
  • Watercolors- liquid or pan (red, orange, yellow, pink is optional)
  • Large round paintbrush
  • Small piece of paper towel
  • Oil pastels
  • Gold metallic oil pastel or paint stick or paint *optional

CREATE:

Here is how it all came together:

Using yellow watercolor paint, draw or trace a large heart shape in the center of the paper.
Make sure the heart is big enough to be the main focus of the artwork.

Inside the heart, use the white oil pastel to draw a lily. The red line represents my first oil pastel line for a petal (but be sure to use white!)

Color in the petals with sketchy lines. The lily represents St. Joseph’s purity and virtue. Press firmly with the pastel so the design resists the watercolor later.

Using a green oil pastel, draw a few lines with circles on the ends for the center of the lily. Add leaves around the petals with the green as well.

Using red and pink watercolor, paint a washy mix of the paint and water right over the lily oil pastel drawing. Watch as the white lily appears through the resist technique!

Use a paper towel to blot up some of the paint off the lily. It helps reveal the drawing AND makes a lovely texture on the watercolor paper.

Add red, orange and yellow watercolor flames at the top to symbolize St. Joseph’s burning love for God.

Optional step: After the paint dries, outline with black oil pastel. Using a gold metallic Kwik Stix or oil pastel or liquid paint, add gold areas on the heart for extra shine!
