In this meaningful mixed media art project, children will explore the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem through the humble donkey He chose to ride. The donkey reminds us of humility, peace, and Christ’s gentle kingship as the crowds waved palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna!”
Using bold black crayon lines, students will follow a step-by-step directed drawing to create a simple donkey portrait. This guided approach helps young artists build confidence in drawing shapes, facial features, and proportion while strengthening listening and observation skills.
After drawing, children will use soft chalk pastels to add rich color and texture to their donkey. Students will practice blending warm browns and highlights to create dimension and bring their artwork to life. The finished donkey is carefully cut out and set aside.
To complete the collage, students create layered paper palm branches by folding and snipping green paper to form fronds. The donkey and palms are then arranged and glued onto a purple background — the liturgical color of Lent, symbolizing preparation, prayer, and reverence as we journey toward Holy Week.
This project strengthens foundational art skills such as line, blending, cutting, layering, and composition — while inviting children to reflect on the joy and meaning of Palm Sunday.
This project takes about one 45 minute session to complete.

Here is how it all came together:

Using a black crayon, draw a large muzzle (snout) for the donkey toward the top of the paper going almost all the way to the right of the page. This is just a sketch! You can color over mistakes. Refer to the drawing guide in the free download or video for the rest of the drawing.

Using different colored browns, gray, cream, and/or even red chalk pastel, color in the donkey. Use one finger at a time to blend colors. Add a darker shadow area under the face.

Outline or re-trace the drawing of the donkey with black oil pastel. Cut it out and set aside.

With black crayon, draw a simple leaf shape onto green paper. This is painted paper, so I drew the leaf on the back. Cut out the leaf.

Fold the leaf in half hotdog style and snip diagonal lines along the edge, being careful not to go all the way to the fold! Line up the leaf so the pointed edge is on the right. Then snip going up to the left.

Open the leaves and use green oil pastels or crayons to add details and texture to the branches.

Arrange the branches and glue to a purple background. Then glue the donkey along the left edge.
