Celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima with a vibrant, faith-filled art project inspired by the Miracle of the Sun witnessed by 70,000 people in Portugal in 1917.
In this mixed media project, children will explore:
This project takes about one 30 minute session to complete for the watercolor sun (plus another 20 minute session for adding Mary to the art!) If you are short on time, but still want a super fun and engaging art lesson that teaches children about Fatima, just the dancing sun background will be great too and make a beautiful display!
Faith Connection: This project reminds children that Mary brings us closer to Jesus, and that prayer—especially the Rosary—is a powerful gift. As they create, children can reflect on the story of the Fatima children and how we can follow their example of faith and obedience.

Here is how it all came together:
Trace a paper plate onto the center of your watercolor paper using a yellow oil pastel for the sun.
To create movement, start at the center and draw a small swirl that gradually gets bigger with the yellow oil pastel (like a snail!). Repeat the spiral line with white, pressing down hard.
Paint over the whole circle with plain water for the wet-on-wet technique. Repeat the spiral lines with yellow watercolor paint. Sprinkle salt while the paint is wet for a fun texture!
Continue this process with orange and red around the edge. Use the tip of the brush to paint a few thin red or orange swirls. Continue adding salt wherever you wish.

To give the illusion of even more movement, paint short repeating strokes that go around the circle using yellow and red or pink. Set aside to dry.
Once the paper is dry, trace over the swirling lines with white oil pastel to make them pop even more!
*This step is optional.
Trace the face and hand templates from the free download with a black crayon. Add the rest of the details including a halo.
Color Mary's face and hands with a skin tone crayon or marker. Add facial features with oil pastel. Use gold metallic oil pastels to add a design on her clothing. Color or paint the halo gold. Draw or paint gold radiating lines around where you are going to glue her down. When the paper is dry, cut out Mary and glue on the left hand side of the dancing sun background.
