Teach children about the holy souls of purgatory with this sparkly chalk pastel exploration! Draw simple shapes for people and color by blending cool colored chalk pastels. Add glitter painted angels as a symbol for what’s to come for these souls!
This tutorial is taken from a very special class featured in the Holy Art Adventure within the Little Holy Hearts Art Club.
The club includes the FULL length art class tutorial video along with a theology guide, poster and more for this project. If you're interested in having access to quality, fun and authentically Catholic art classes every single month, be sure to get on the waitlist for enrollment when it opens again HERE.
In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful chalk pastel project that encourages children to pray for those souls in purgatory. This project is a perfect liturgical tie in for the month of November, which is devoted to the holy souls in purgatory.
The children's book, New Friends Now and Forever: A Story about the Holy Souls by Susan Tassone is a FANTASTIC resource for sharing the Church's teaching on purgatory. The illustrations inspired the cool colors of this project and are beautiful depictions of the belief in the communion of saints. It's a wonderful book to share with children for the month of November, and one that my children reach for over and over again.

Here is how to make this Holy Souls Art Project:
Print off and cut out the face and praying hands template (freebie download). Trace 3 or 4 faces across the bottom third of the paper with white oil pastel. Then trace the hands below the face. Add curved lines for the bodies.
Draw smaller ovals all around the ones you traced. Color the shapes with purple or blue chalk pastels. Blend the two colors together in the shapes with one finger.
Outline the faces, hands and bodies with black oil pastel. Then add facial features like hair, eyes, a nose and mouth. Blend purple and different shades of blue in the middle of the paper leading up to heaven.
Draw clouds with white oil pastel in the top third of the paper for heaven. Blend white chalk pastel over the lines.
Glue the angel templates and paint with gold glitter paint. Add dots of glue and sprinkle glitter over the glue.
