FROG Art for Kids (Fully Rely On God)
I’m always looking for fun and creative ways of sharing the Faith with children. When my daughter started Kindergarten this past August, my jaw dropped when I took her to meet her teacher and see her classroom that had the most adorable decorative theme: FROGS!
I was immediately taken back to my middle school classroom at the Catholic school I attended because that classroom was also drowning in frog decorations. It wasn’t just because she taught science and loved teaching about living things, but it was also a symbol of her life motto: FULLY RELY ON GOD.
And when I discovered the precious book, F.R.O.G. Fully Rely on God by Jennifer Randazzo & illustrated by Jess Bircham, I knew I had found the perfect Catholic art project inspiration… sweet, happy paper frogs that truly POP with color and a bit of sparkle!

THE BOOK
F.R.O.G. Fully Rely on God by Jennifer Randazzo is a sweet book that is dedicated to Sister Thomasann Quinn, who carried a pocket-sized frog that symbolized the importance of being able to fully rely on God in this life as we strive to be united with Him in heaven someday.
It tells the story of a girl named Rose who needed some guidance trying to figure out what she was meant to do with her life and how she turned to prayer to help her get on the right track. What an incredibly important lesson for children today! If you are confused in this world, turn to the Church, our faith, the saints and prayer for answers.
She then is led to a creek where she meets the cutest little green frog who gives her an encouraging message from God to always rely on Him because he gives strength and peace.
We absolutely love this book!
Jeremiah 29:11 is a wonderful Scripture tie-in for this project.
For I know full well the plans I have for you, plans for your welfare and not for your misfortune, plans that will offer you a future filled with hope.
PREP
Here is what you need to make this project that can be done in 2-30 minute sessions (or 1- 1 hour session where the background gets painted then dries while you read the book):
- 12″ x 18″ white & green heavy weight construction paper (sulphite paper)
- Scraps of white paper for the eyes
- Small circle tracer for the eyes
- Oil pastels or construction paper crayons (black, white, light green)
- Black crayon
- Large round brushes
- Blue and/or turquoise liquid watercolor paint (or pan)
- Scissors & glue
- Templates (click the box below)
- Optional: Glitter foam letter stickers and/or cross stickers

CREATE
Here is how to make these adorable frogs:
Begin by using white oil pastel to draw clouds all over the white paper. You won’t be able to see them very well at first, but press down hard so that when you paint over them with blue watercolor for a resist technique, you can see the lines clearly.
Using liquid or pan watercolor paint, paint over the whole white paper with blue and/or turquoise using a large round brush. Paint right over the white lines you drew to see them revealed underneath! This is called watercolor resist.
Fold the 12″ x 18″ green paper in half hamburger style. Line up the frog template to the folded edge and trace with a crayon. Cut out the shape while the paper is still folded. Open the fold to reveal a symmetrical frog shape!
Using a black oil pastel, outline or trace along the outer edge of the shape so the shape really pops. If children have a hard time with this step depending on their fine motor skills, feel free to skip.
Then draw a large upside down “U” for the belly on the bottom center of the frog.
Put your oil pastel in between the upside down “U” and the neck starting on the left side. Draw a slightly curved line that goes all the way to the bottom and add a zig-zag line that connects to the upside down “U” to make the front leg. Repeat on the right side. Refer to the video above.
Finish the body of the frog by drawing a curved line starting where the back legs bend going all the way to the bottom. Repeat for both sides.
Using a light green oil pastel or construction paper crayon, color inside the upside down “U.” Then go over the green with white to blend the colors for an ever brighter light green. Add dots to the frog body and two dots for a nose and a mouth.
Trace two circles on white paper for the eyes and cut out. I used a small condiment cup. Color eyes with black crayon or Sharpie (the black oil pastel smudges easily). Once the background is dry, glue the frog and the eyes to it. Add sparkly foam stickers to spell FROG and add religious symbols to bring it back to the most important lesson… FULLY RELY ON GOD!
*If you want to skip the painting step, you could just glue the frog to light blue paper with white clouds drawn with oil pastel.
